All you need to know about stoptober
Approved by our Clinical team | Mar 30, 2021

Stoptober is a campaign that Public Health England runs for 28 days every October to encourage Britain to stop smoking. It’s based on evidence that suggests after 28 days without smoking, you are up to five times more likely to be able to quit permanently.
Because the campaign takes place over October it makes the task of quitting more manageable as you can tackle it one day at a time.
Why should I take part in Stoptober?
expand_moreThere are many reasons to join in with Stoptober and try to quit smoking, the first of which is that smoking is harmful to your health, and the health of your families and friends. It’s also bad for the environment, and your bank balance. However, we all know that quitting smoking can be tough, especially without support.
During Stoptober there will be plenty of support and encouragement available to you to help you and make quitting easier for you. With that support you are up to four times as likely to quit smoking.
Reasons to quit smoking
expand_moreThere are many reasons to quit smoking and they will be individual to you but here are three reasons to give you inspiration:
For your health
Stopping smoking gives you more energy, increases fertility and improves your sense of smell and taste.
For your family
Want to live longer for them and protect your children from second hand smoke?
Maybe it’s for money
On average, stopping smoking saves most people £250 a month – that’s £3000 a year. Find out how much you could save here.
Ways to stay motivated
expand_moreTry stop smoking apps
Apps can help keep you motivated throughout Stoptober and beyond. They can calculate how much money you’re saving from quitting smoking and track how many days you’ve been smoke free.
We recommend the NHS Smokefree app for additional help while quitting smoking. This 4-week programme combines practical support, encouragement and tailored advice.
Try face-to-face support
Available in selected stores, our FREE NHS Stop Smoking Service gives you one-to-one time with a trained stop smoking advisor. They can help you with your goals, give advice on the best way to quit smoking for good and help you find Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) that will suit you best.
