Maloff Protect frequently asked questions

How does Maloff Protect work?

expand_more

Maloff Protect is a form of malaria chemoprophylaxis (also known as antimalarial) – a preventative medication which travellers can take to fight against infection.

The P. falciparum parasite this is the most serious form of human malaria and is responsible for 99% of associated deaths.* Maloff Protect contains ingredients atovaquone and proguanil, which both work to halt the production of the P. falciparum parasite after it has entered the bloodstream.

Atovaquone works to stop the production of substances needed for the parasites’ reproduction and Proguanil hydrochloride inhibits the action of a compound that is found in the parasite.

How quickly does Maloff Protect work?

expand_more

To be effective, you need to take Maloff Protect one to two days before you start your travels, every day of your stay and seven days after your return to a malaria-free area.

Maloff Protect works by killing the Plasmodium parasite and stopping it spreading. After being bitten, it takes up to seven days for Maloff Protect to kill the malarial parasites in your bloodstream. If it is taken incorrectly or the course is not completed, you place yourself at an increased risk of malaria infection. There are no other commonly used antimalarial drugs that offer a shorter period of medication. Maloff Protect is particularly convenient for those last-minute travellers!

Who can take Maloff Protect?
